Melbourne Cup Nominees Head Makybe Diva Stakes Field 2012

A classy field has been accepted for this year’s edition of the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington on Saturday with all but one of the hopefuls having also been nominated for the 2012 Melbourne Cup this spring.

Mawingo & Lights Of Heaven

Doomben Cup winner Mawingo (black & white checked sleeves) is one of 11 Melbourne Cup nominations running in the 2012 Makybe Diva Stakes this Saturday

Aside from the Clinton McDonald-trained Second Effort, who ran a brave third to Sincero on the back of a Group 2 Lawrence Stakes win in the Memsie Stakes last Saturday, all 11 other horses in the 2012 Makybe Diva Stakes field also feature in the early nominations for the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) on the first Tuesday of November which were taken on Tuesday.

Running as Flemington Race 6 at 3:35pm on Saturday, this year’s $300,000 Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) is certainly shaping up as a crack showdown by some of the season’s most promising stayers.

The shortest-priced of the spring cup hopes running in the Makybe Diva this weekend is the Anthony Freedman-trained Mawingo.

Paying $26 to become this year’s Melbourne Cup winner, the smart Tertullian stallion is also a top fancy for the $2.65 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 20 paying $19 through bookmaker.com.au.

Winner of the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) inBrisbaneback in May, Mawingo was last seen running third to Lights Of Heaven in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup over the mile and a half on June 9.

They have an outstanding first-up record, including their big two length victory over the Flemington mile when resuming for the autumn in April, making them an excellent choice for Saturday’s race.

The other dominant three stayers in the futures Melbourne Cup odds that will face off in the Makybe Diva on the weekend are then December Draw ($34), Manighar ($34), and Southern Speed ($41).

The Mark Kavanagh-trained December Draw was the favourite for last year’s Caulfield Cup thanks to  three successive wins in Melbourne leading up to the race, including the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, but something went amiss on the big day and they failed to beat home any other starter when 18th behind Southern Speed.

They run for the first time since on Saturday and are sure to improve over the coming weeks.

Manighar meanwhile was one of the best performed horses of last season, Peter Moody’s imported Linamix gelding becoming the first horse in history to take out the Australian Cup, Ranvet Stakes, The BMW treble.

Formerly prepared in Europeby Luca Cumani, Manighar was last seen running third to Mawingo in the Doomben Cup.

Reigning Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed, who pays $21 to successfully defend her title in the race in the Caulfield Cup odds at bookmaker.com.au, has been in top form this time in.

She kicked off her spring preparation with a first-up third to Happy Trails in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville before her big three length victory over My Bentley in the Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) also inAdelaide.

She runs interstate for the first time this season on Saturday and is sure to have plenty of fans as she goes up to the mile.

Also in the mix on Saturday is 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient last seen finishing second in the Sydney Cup over the 3200m.

The great old galloper is one of three former Melbourne Cup champions nominated for the ‘race that stops a nation’ this year – along with Americain (2010) and Dunaden (2011), and will be vying to become the oldest horse in history to take out the world’s richest handicap this November.

Other notable 2012 Makybe Diva Stakes hopefuls then include the Robert Hickmott-trained duo of Mourayan and Midas Touch, Ipswich Cup – Caloundra Cup double winner Shenzhou Steeds, SA Derby winner Zabeelionaire on the rails, and resuming Brisbane Cup runner-up Dance With Her in gate three.
