Kelinni V Julienas Round 2 – Wyong Cup 2012

Promising stayers Kelinni and Julienas will go head to head for the second time this campaign when they line up in the Listed 2012 Wyong Cup (2100m) on Friday.

Kelinni

Kelinni is one of the top Wyong Cup contenders

The two were the only horses who looked a chance over 2200 metres at Warwick Farm on August 25 as the Chris Waller-trained Kelinni got the upper hand in the dying stages.

But it is likely the Waterhouse-trained import Julienas will be an improved horse this time out as the Warwick Farm hitout was just his second start on Australian soil.

Bought by Waterhouse from the UK to target the Melbourne Cup, the six-year-old has placed in both his Australian starts and showed toughness on both occasions.

The son of Cape Cross meets Kelinni as a fitter horse this time but that doesn’t mean it will be easy to get the upper hand.

Kelinni has not missed a place in his last eight starts and will be chasing a third consecutive victory after two Saturday wins at Warwick Farm in August.

While the rematch is one exciting part of this year’s Wyong Cup, the $150,000 event is no forgone conclusion and both will have to get past the Waller-trained Stout Hearted.

The five-year-old is being aimed at the Group 1 Metropolitan in October and won consecutive Saturday races last month before finishing third to Glencadam Gold at Rosehill on Saturday.

On that occasion Stout Hearted got too far back in a race that lacked speed and was unable to make up enough ground on the Waterhouse-trained Glencadam Gold.

Race tactics could again influence the result with Julienas expected to be ridden forward as is typical of the style of Waterhouse-trained runners.

Other strong Wyong Cup entrants include Peter Moody’s in-form charge Storm Burst and Queensland stayers Racing Heart and Warrior Within.
