Chelmsford Stakes 2012 Final Field & Barrier Draw Revealed

The final field and barriers for one of the key races at Saturday’s Warwick Farm meeting have been released with just nine gallopers accepted for the 2012 Chelmsford Stakes.

Lights Of Heaven

Lights Of Heaven is one of the 2012 Caulfield Cup hopes running in the Chelmsford Stakes in Sydney this Saturday

Due to run as Warwick Farm Race 5 at 3:15pm, the $175,000 Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) is a telling early spring carnival lead-up for a number of Caulfield Cup 2012 chances looking to earn a trip to Melbourne.

The shortest-priced of the Chelmsford Stakes field in the futures odds at bookmaker.com.au for the $2.65 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 20 is the Peter Moody-trained Lights Of Heaven ($26).

Winner of the Schweppes SA Oaks as a three-year-old last year, Lights Of Heaven was one of the spruik horses heading into last year’s Caulfield Cup.

She failed to make the field however after a number of disappointing runs but did manage to finish third to Descarado in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes before her dead last finish in the Group 1 Mackinnon at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.

Lights Of Heaven regained her form when she travelled to trainer Moody’s native Queensland for the Brisbane Winter Carnival, the daughter of Zabeel running second to Mawingo in the Group 1 Doomben Cup before her winning double in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup and Group 2 Brisbane Cup.

She ran a below par 11th when beaten three and a half lengths first-up by Pinwheel in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) on August 25, but Moody is confident she can improve on that run getting up to the mile and be far more competitive second-up on Saturday.

Other 2012 Caulfield Cup bound stayers running in the Chelmsford this weekend include the Hawkes-trained Polish Knight who was second in the Australian Derby over the 2400m during the autumn and who also needs to improve on their Warwick Stakes run having finished ninth, and the David Vandyke-trained Lamasery – third in The Metropolitan last spring and who looks on track for a big prep after a good fourth in the Warwick Stakes when resuming.

Other notable Chelmsford Stakes hopefuls this year include Chris Waller’s veteran nine-year-old galloper Danleigh who proved they still had a good run in their old legs when third in the Warwick Stakes, the resuming Ginga Dude and Grahame Begg’s reigning Epsom Handicap winner Secret Admirer – second in the Warwick Stakes which could prove the form race for the Chelmsford.
