Lady Melksham Ready for 2012 Let’s Elope Stakes

A winner of four of their five career starts to date, the promising and consistent local mare Lady Melksham will look to continue her good record with another Group win in Saturday’s Let’s Elope Stakes 2012 at Flemington Racecourse.

The John Sadler-trained Artie Schiller four-year-old didn’t debut until April this year and was able to win her opening three career starts.

Her first defeat came at Flemington on June 9 when third to Riziz in the Listed AR Creswick Stakes (1200m) which was also her first stakes assignment.

After a 10 week break Lady Melksham resumed on August 18 at Caulfield against a field of fellow mares and, relishing the Heavy (10) track, was able to beat home Le Societe by just under half a length in the Group 3 WW Cockram Stakes (1200m).

She returns to the track of her first loss on Saturday for the $220,000 Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) looking to add more black type to her name.

While on paper Lady Melksham looks like a wet-tracker, triple Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss has warned she is a versatile racehorse that will thrive on firmer ground this weekend.

“I can’t wait to get her back on top of the ground, a couple of times on top of the ground her work at the track has been really electric,” Boss said.

“She handles soft tracks really well as well, but she’s got an amazing turn of foot when you get her on top of the ground.

“She’s a really exciting filly. She’s put together a really good record, and her only run where she got beat was down the straight and she was at the end of that prep where she probably wasn’t as good.”

Boss has ridden her for two wins the first of which was a five length effort at Sandown during the winter.

He was also aboard for the Cockram Stakes success.

It is shaping up as a strong edition of the Let’s Elope Stakes this year with the likes of Stuart Webb’s multiple Group 1 winner Yosei, and the Shaune Ritchie-trained stablemates Miss Artistic and Zurella over form New Zealand having run one-two in the NZ Oaks last season.
