Ginga Dude Kicks off Spring in 2012 Chelmsford Stakes

Graeme Boyd’s veteran Kiwi galloper Ginga Dude will return for their nine-year-old season at Warwick Farm Racecourse this Saturday, the last-start Group 3 winner to run in the Chelmsford Stakes 2012.

Ginga Dude will kick off their spring campaign in Sydney's 2012 Chelmsford Stakes this weekend

The $175,000 Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) will be the 54th career start for the Istidaad gelding, Ginga Dude last seen beating home a decent field of winter stayers in the Group 3 Tatt’s Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm on June 23 carrying 59kg.

Boyd opted to send Ginga Dude to Coffs Harbour on the NSW north coast for their latest spell, the ageing racehorse kept in light work their instead of being sent home to face the freezing cold of their home country.

Having raced exclusively in Australia since February last year Ginga Dude will actually be making their Warwick Farm debut in a race that could also feature the likes of David Vandyke’s 2012 Caulfield Cup-bound Lamasery, Peter Moody’s Brisbane Cup – Eagle Farm Cup double winning mare Lights Of Heaven and reigning Epsom Handicap champ Secret Admirer coming off a brilliant first-up second in the Warwick Stakes.

After a nice exhibition gallop at Grafton during last Thursday’s meeting, Boyd is confident Ginga Dude can come back with a good effort in the Chelmsford where they will look to post their fourth first-up win from nine attempts.

“It was exactly what I wanted,” Boyd said of the Grafton gallop.

“He’s a nine-year-old but is going as well as ever.”

Following Saturday’s assignment Boyd plans to take Ginga Dude to Royal Randwick for the $200,000 Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) on September 22 followed by the $125,000 Group 3 Craven Plate over the same track and distance on October 6.

There is a chance they will then press on with a Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival prep, or if they aren’t up to that class, they will return home for the New Zealand Summer Racing Carnival.
