Sincero Genuine Cox Plate Contender After 2012 Memsie Stakes Win

Sincero announced himself as a genuine 2012 Cox Plate contender on Saturday when he produced a fast finish to claim a two-length win in the Group 2 2012 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Sincero fired to win the Memsie Stakes on Saturday

The five-year-old produced a sharp turn of foot with 250 metres left in the race to bolt past Happy Trails and in doing so take his career record to 12 wins from 23 starts.

The dual Group 1 winner kept his excellent reputation of performing well fresh alive and he will next turn out in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) before October’s Group 1 Caulfield Stakes and Cox Plate (2040m).

The son of Umatilla represents a great story for racing, having been bought as a yearling for just $8000 in 2009.

With plenty of racing still to come in his career, the Stephen Farley-trained gelding has already amassed a prize pool of more than $1.65 million.

Sincero finished ninth in last year’s Cox Plate but Farley is confident he has learned a lot from the initial venture to the Victorian capital.

“I came here last year thinking we were a chance in the best races, but I got a few things wrong,” Farley said.

“At the same time, I think I learned a lot.”

While Happy Trails fought on well to finish runner-up and Second Effort finished in third place, the eye-catching run of the race came from Green Moon who made up plenty of ground to come home in fifth position.

Runner-up in last year’s Caulfield Cup, Green Moon is favourite for the prestigious 2400-metre race this year and will have a campaign aimed either there or at the Cox Plate.
