Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Gai Waterhouse continued to strengthen her imposing spring carnival contingent on the weekend with a number of eye-catching winners including Proisir who could be Spring Champion Stakes 2012 bound after a good win at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Saturday.
While all eyes were on the unbeaten Pierro racing away for career win number seven in the $125,000 Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m), which saw him storm to the top of the futures odds for a number of upcoming Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival majors including the 2012 Cox Plate, Waterhouse was also impressed with the effort of another young colt Proisir.
Also maintaining an undefeated record at the meeting, Choisir three-year-old Proisir ran away with the $85,000 TVN Jockeys Trust Handicap (1400m).
Going out as the odds-on $1.70 favourite the winner overcame the extreme outside draw (10 of 10) to beat home the Bart Cummings-trained Norzita by an easy two and three quarter lengths.
They came off a similarly impressive victory over 1200m at Hawkesbury on debut a month earlier and will now be prepared for a shot at the $400,000 Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on October 6 during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
“I loved the way he relaxed today,” Waterhouse said of Proisir on Saturday.
“He was a horse who lived on his nerves.
“As long as he is right I think he can go quickly through his grades and maybe get to the Spring Champion Stakes this preparation.”
Jockey Nash Rawiller, who has ridden Proisir for both of their career victories so far, was also pleased with their Rosehill win but said the still-green galloper would be even better in the autumn next year.
“He is a lovely horse but he is still very raw,” Rawiller said.
“He relaxed beautifully today.
“I wouldn’t rule out the Spring Champion but he will definitely be a better horse in the autumn.”
Should they successfully get to the 2012 Spring Champion Stakes and perform up to par Proisir could possibly join their star stablemate Pierro in Melbourne having also been nominated for the $1 million Group 1 The Age Caulfield Guineas (1600m) the following week at Caulfield.
While betting markets for the Spring Champion Stakes are yet to be released at bookies around the country, in the futures 2012 Caulfield Guineas odds Pierro is the $2 favourite followed by Proisir at $11.
