Melbourne Cup On Glencadam Gold’s Radar After 2012 Premier’s Cup Win

Gai Waterhouse-trained import Glencadam Gold performed so strongly when winning Saturday’s 2012 Premier’s Cup (1800m) that the Sydney trainer said he will be aimed at the 2012 Melbourne Cup.

It is only early days but the former British stayer signalled his potential ahead of the big staying races to control the race from start to finish against a decent field of stayers.

With Tommy Berry in the saddle, the son of Refuse To Blend took up an early lead and despite a challenge at the top of the straight he found an extra gear and kicked away to win by two lengths from Permit and the in-form Stout Hearted.

Waterhouse declared him a Caulfield Cup contender after winning on debut at Canterbury earlier this month but she went one step further following Saturday’s hitout.

“Why not have a go [at the Melbourne Cup]? If we don’t get there, we don’t get there,” Waterhouse said.

“This is such an exciting stayer in the making. He could go on to some really good things.”

Berry was also full of praise for the horse that was formerly trained by Sir Henry Cecil.

“He’s a pretty serious stayer,” Berry said.

The first round of Melbourne Cup nominations are due tomorrow for which he will be entered to go along with his nomination in the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup and the Metropolitan.

Metropolitan-bound Stout Hearted was too far back to challenge the leader but finished off strongly to take third spot and could run again in Friday’s Wyong Cup.
