Improving Adelaide galloper Happy Trails continued his path towards some the spring’s biggest races with a strong runner-up performance to Sincero in Saturday’s 2012 Memsie Stakes.
It was the second run of the preparation for Happy Trails who kicked off his campaign with a win in the Group 3 Spring Stakes at Morphetville on August 11.
Trainer Paul Beshara has already suggested the 2012 Cox Plate is the ultimate goal for the five-year-old who has also been nominated for the Caulfield Cup.
Saturday’s performance was impressive as he showed versatility in that he could be ridden closer to the pace and led for much of the straight before being passed by a flying Sincero.
He will get a Cox Plate trial on Saturday week in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes where he will come up against a number of contenders for the weight-for-age championship of Australasia.
Beshara was thrilled with the way he adapted to the forward riding position on Saturday and believes it will hold him in good stead heading towards the rest of the spring.
“We had to go forward as there was no speed in the race and moving forward it is very handy to know he can race that way,” Beshara said.
“His run was very very good on Saturday and everyone was really happy with him.”
Happy Trails is no stranger to Moonee Valley, having finished second in the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes as a three-year-old and also ran fourth in last year’s Crystal Mile.
The son of Good Journey has always shown potential but seems to finally be starting to realise it this campaign.
Happy Trails’ career record stands at three wins and 11 placings from 25 starts and has collected over $370,000 in prizemoney.
