Cuban Sunday Eyes Caulfield Cup 2012 after Slickpix Win

Pat Carey is entertaining thoughts of a 2012 Caulfield Cup bid with his in-form galloper Cuban Sunday after the five-year-old’s Slickpix Stakes win at Caulfield on the weekend.

Cuban Sunday

Cuban Sunday could go to the 2012 Caulfield Cup after winning the Slickpix Stakes

The Benicio five-year-old, formerly prepared by Mick Price, joined Carey’s Mornington operation at the start of the year and after three earlier attempts finally scored a win for their new trainer when overcoming barrier 16 of 16 to take out Saturday’s $120,000 Listed Slickpix Stakes (1700m).

“They just sent him down to me for a change of scenery,” Carey said.

“I’m pleased to get a horse like him as he came to me in good order.”

Ridden by Michael Walker the $26 roughie found the line three quarters of a length clear of fellow double-figure outsider Ebony Rock ($61) while the Darren Weir-trained Streets Away ($7) crossed another length away in third.

Race favourite Banca Mo ($4.40), who came off a big three length win over 2040m at Moonee Valley, meanwhile could only manage to finish a disappointing 12th beaten nearly six lengths.

Cuban Sunday, who has winning form up to 2100m, will now tentatively target the $2.65 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) on Saturday October 20.

“I’ll just keep putting him in handicaps and we’ll see how far he’ll take us,” Carey said.

The gelding has only once been over a mile and a half when they ran a close third to Almodovar over the Caulfield Cup track and distance in the Listed Galilee Series Final in April last year.

They are also nominated for $400,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) at Royal Randwick on October 6 during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

The Caulfield Cup 2012 is obviously a very ambitious aim for Cuban Sunday this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the horse never having raced in Group company, and unsurprisingly they pay $151 in the latest Caulfield Cup odds at
