Turnely A 2012 Golden Rose Roughie

Clarry Conners’ $101 long-shot for the Golden Rose 2012 next month Turnely will look to launch themselves into genuine contention for the $1 million Sydney Spring Racing Carnival classic when they race at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

While the weekend’s official Golden Rose lead-up is the $1250,000 Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m) where star colt Pierro and the highly-rated All Too Hard will face off in a supercharged showdown, Rosehill Race 2 could also unveil a genuine chance in the September 15 feature.

Olympus gelding Turnley races for the first time at Rosehill having won two of their five career starts to date including their most recent run over 1400m at Hawkesbury on August 23.

They race over the Golden Rose distance again on Saturday in the $85,000 TVN Jockeys Trust Handicap where they have drawn barrier three of 10.

Currently Turnley is rated $101 in the futures Golden Rose odds at bookmaker.com.au led by All Too Hard ($2.40), a price that is likely to come in should they score an upset at Rosehill this weekend.

“If he wins we will run in the Golden Rose against all those silvertails,” Conners said.

“He’s got to win but he’s a nice horse.”

In the Rosehill race two markets for Saturday Turnley is paying $15 with markets led by fellow last-start Hawkesbury winner Proisir at $2.30.

Conners remains hopeful that Turnely can make the grade this time in, the youngster having continued to improve as they step up in distance after the advice of jockey Peter Robl who has been aboard for four of their five runs to date including their six and a half length win on debut at Wyong back in June.

“I had him sprinting early on but Peter Robl said to me, `he wants 1400 or 1600 metres’,” Conners said.

“So I put him over 1400 at Hawkesbury and it was a good, gutsy win.”

Other Golden Rose roughies looking to improve their claims for the Group 1 in the TVN Jockeys Trust Handicap include General Nediym colt Nediym’s Quest and the Bart Cummings-trained Norzita, who has won at Rosehill, before paying $61 and $101 respectively.
