A keen and ready Rekindled Interest will begin his spring campaign this Saturday at Caulfield in the Group 2 2012 Mesmie Stakes (1400m).
The 2011 Cox Plate placegetter is again being targeted at the weight-for-age feature but is in good condition to kick off his campaign with a win tomorrow.
Originally set to begin in the PB Lawrence Stakes two weeks ago, trainer Jim Conlan chose to dodge a heavy track and looks set to get an ideal surface tomorrow.
Conlan is not concerned that he missed the first scheduled run and is confident he can make an impact in tomorrow’s Melbourne feature.
“I don’t think it will make a great deal of difference missing that run two weeks ago, the advantage is the track conditions will be much better,” Conlan said.
“I took him out for a gallop last Saturday and he worked well and came through it in good order and he is a happy and sound horse.”
Provided all goes to plan on Saturday, the son of Redoute’s Choice will follow a similar schedule to the one that saw him eventually place in the Cox Plate and Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes.
His next test will be defending his title in the Group 2 Dato’ Chin Nam Stakes which he won by a length ahead of Alcopop last year.
Despite the 1400 metres being a touch short of ideal, Conlan believes his stable star can hold his own in the quality field and his only reservation surrounds the Caulfield track.
“He gets around Caulfield okay but he is at his best at Moonee Valley,” Conlan said.
Among the main rivals for Rekindled Interest in the Memsie are Perth star Luckygray and 2011 Stradbroke Handicap winner Sincero.
