Chris Waller’s in-form five-year-old Stout Hearted is a short-priced favourite to continue his success in Saturday’s Listed 2012 Premier’s Cup (1800m) at Rosehill.
The talented gelding has won his last two starts in Sydney in convincing fashion and has been installed as bookmaker.com.au $2.30 favourite for Saturday’s hitout.
The former British stayer first raced for Waller in March and in six starts under the leading Sydney trainer is yet to finish worse than fourth.
Next best in the market is fellow import Glencadam Gold ($4.00) who won in his first race on Australian soil at Canterbury on August 15.
The win prompted trainer Gai Waterhouse to declare him a Caulfield Cup contender and he has also been nominated for the Cox Plate.
Outside the top two elects, only two horses fall under double figures, with both Nextanix and Brave The Way currently being offered at $9.00.
Former Queensland gelding Brave The Way had an immediate impact upon joining Anthony Cummings at Randwick, winning his first two starts before running fourth to Stout Hearted in the Premier’s Cup Prelude.
Nextanix, who is being targeted at the Metropolitan before heading to Melbourne, kicked off his spring campaign in promising fashion two weeks ago when second to Kontiki Park over 1400m.
Next in the market is lightly-raced Gwenda Markwell-trained gelding Peal Of Bells ($12.00) and Premier’s Cup Prelude runner-up Gazza Guru ($14.00).
Apart from Stout Hearted, leading trainer Chris Waller has two other chances with multiple stakes winner Permit ($15.00) and last year’s Metropolitan winner The Verminator ($21.00).
