Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The bookies are taking no chances with returning Golden Slipper winner Pierro who has opened as the narrow favourite for their resuming run in Saturday’s The Run To The Rose 2012 at Rosehill Gardens.
Gai Waterhouse’s star Lonhro colt was the dominant juvenile of last season completing the rare 2YO triple crown at his three most recent runs during April.
The Cox Plate bound youngster will now look to maintain their unbeaten record with win number seven in the $125,000 Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m).
They will jump the 60kg topweight under the set weights plus penalties conditions but jockey Nash Rawiller and Waterhouse believe they are still the one to beat and so too the bookies.
“I think he’s an exceptional horse and he is only against his own age and he’s beaten them all before,” Waterhouse said.
“He deserves the weight. He probably deserves more weight but that’s what he’s got.
“It’s first-up and there’s always a slight chance (they’re vulnerable) but he’s a very happy horse going into it and he’s an exceptionally competitive animal.”
In the latest The Run To The Rose betting odds at bookmaker.com.au Pierro, drawn in barrier four of six, is the early market mover and $2.20 favourite.
With their major spring assignments still a way off some punters are questioning whether Pierro will be at peak fitness first-up on Saturday, but Waterhouse has warned not to bet against her triple Group 1 winner who she has been working hard in the lead-up to The Run To The Rose to ensure they are ready to go.
“He has no chink in the armour; people underestimate how good this horse is,” she said.
“I don’t want him to have a gut wrencher (first-up), that’s why I had put the work in to him.”
Pierro has had two exhibition gallops between races at the last two Saturday meetings in Sydney, and booked their Run To The Rose spot after a searching hit-out at Randwick on Tuesday.
“I thought about it long and hard, I only finalised this morning,” Waterhouse said.
“He had quite a searching gallop yesterday on the Kensington but I’m happy with where he is at.
“He is fabulous, he wouldn’t be starting if I didn’t think he was ready.
“He is three kilograms off his racing weight.”
Hot on their heels is another crack colt in All Too Hard, the promising Hawkes-trained talent paying $2.50.
All Too Hard, who has been in the headlines since their black type win on debut at Flemington back in February, will be out to reclaim bragging rights over Pierro after running one and three quarter lengths away second to him when the pair first met in the Group 1 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 14.
Second-up on Saturday after running third in their three-year-old debut behind Snitzerland in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) there is plenty of upside to All Too Hard who should get a gun run from barrier two and give the favourite a genuine run for their money.
The only other single figure chance in the 2012 The Run To The Rose odds is then Epaulette paying $7.
Peter Snowden’s Commands colt hasn’t run since their dead last finish in the Golden Slipper which can be forgiven, Epaulette having come within a nose of Pierro the start before when second in the Todman Stakes over Saturday’s track and distance.
The Anthony Cummings-trained duo of Your Song, a known wet tracker that would prefer some rain, and Ninth Legion follow in the markets paying $12 and $15 respectively – both heading towards a run against All Too Hard again in the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) on September 15.
Ashokan is then the $19 roughie of The Run To The Rose field and betting markets, John O’Shea’s More Than Ready colt having been well beaten by Pierro in both the Golden Slipper (12th) and the Sires Produce (6th) during the autumn.
