The race may have lost its headliner with Samaready ruled out of the 2012 McNeil Stakes but there’s still a hot favourite in the Caulfield feature this Saturday with the unbeaten Elite Elle looking to maintain her perfect record at start number five.
Drawn wide in barrier 10 of 12 for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m) the Tony Vasil-trained Shamardal filly was last seen breaking her black type maiden status with a good win in the Listed Quezette Stakes (1100m).
It was a muddy track that day, Elite Elle having won her past three on wet ground, but she still beat some quality types including fourth placed Blue Diamond Stakes winner Samaready.
In the HDF McNeil Stakes odds for Saturday Elite Elle’s record has seen her installed as the $3 favourite at bookmaker.com.au, jockey Mark Zahra riding her for the first time.
Only three other horses are also rated single-figure chances in the McNeil Stakes betting with:
- #5 Kabayan ($4.60) – Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding won on debut before two close seconds most recently when defeated only a short half-head by Sizzling in the Group 1 TJ Smith (1600m) at Eagle Farm during the winter, resume here having had one good trial at Randwick and should run well fresh over this distance from a nice barrier six draw with ace Victorian hoop Luke Nolen in the saddle
- #3 Amorino ($7.50) – Gerald Ryan’s hit and miss Snitzel colt has the extreme outside barrier to overcome as they return after a ninth to Pierro in the Golden Slipper in April, trainer opted for this race instead of taking on Pierro again in Sydney, has a great first-up record and has claims even from the draw
- #9 If I Could ($9) – Mark Kavanagh-trained colt has had just two previous starts when second down the Flemington straight on debut in January, and a distant eighth to Mama’s Choice in the Chairman’s at Caulfield in February, look to be under the odds and will need to have improved leaps and bounds to be competitive here
Other longer-priced hopefuls that could represent great value on Memsie Stakes Day then include Jason Warren’s smart three-year-old Pronto Pronto ($10) who ran second to 2012 Golden Rose favourite All Too Hard in the VRC Sires Produce back in March before their first-up fourth in The Rosebud, Danny O’Brien’s untapped son of O’Reilly Shamexpress ($11) and Cranbourne galloper Force Command ($11) racing for just the second time.
