Mosheen Recovering Well Ahead of 2012 Toorak Handicap

Four-time Group 1 winning mare Mosheen continues to recover well from throat surgery with trainer Robert Smerdon looking at the Toorak Handicap 2012 on October 13 as her first elite level assignment of the spring.

Mosheen is set to return to racing in the Bobbie Lewis Quality next month

The brilliant daughter of Fastnet Rock, winner of the Australian Guineas – Randwick Guineas – Vinery Stud Stakes treble last season, underwent a throat operation to repair an entrapped epiglottis earlier this month and is making a rapid recovery from the straightforward surgery that isn’t expected to have any lasting side effects.

Mosheen, yet to make her four-year-old debut, had a pleasing gallop at home on Wednesday morning impressing Smerdon with her progress.

“She galloped on the course proper this morning and was really keen, no sign of any problem,” he said.

“That’s the second piece of strong work she’s done since she had the procedure on her throat.

“She’s been scoped every second day, I couldn’t be happier with her.”

Her regular jockey Danny Nikolic, aboard for all but one of her 14 career starts to date, was in the saddle for the workout and was also pleased with her performance.

“Her work was perfect, she pulled up well, her breathing was good, everything is looking great,” Nikolic said.

Originally Smerdon was hoping to have Mosheen ready for a first-up run in the $220,000 Group 2 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield this weekend.

She will be saved however and resume instead in the $150,000 Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington on September 8.

While her grand final goal this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is still the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 27, Mosheen currently co $11 third favourite with boom colt All Too Hard in the Cox Plate 2012 odds at, Smerdon is also looking at the $400,000 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield two weeks earlier for her.
