Caulfield Cup favourite Green Moon will begin his second journey towards the $2.5 million event this weekend when he contests the Group 2 2012 Memsie Stakes (1400m).
A runner-up in the Caulfield Cup last year, the son of Montjeu had just one start in the autumn where he produced a dominant performance to win the Group 2 Blamey Stakes.
The exact spring target has not yet been decided for the star import but owner Nick Williams confirmed both the 2012 Caulfield Cup and 2012 Cox Plate stand as strong possibilities.
“The way he won the Blamey he wouldn’t surprise you if could step up and become a genuine weight-for-age horse,” Williams said.
“I guess what it comes down to is is your are talking about a Caulfield Cup or a Cox Plate.
“He’s going to be nicely weighted in the Caulfield Cup.”
While the Irish-bred horse won convincingly first-up in the Blamey Stakes in the autumn, Williams said he wasn’t expecting such a strong performance on Saturday given he has such a long preparation ahead of him.
“He’s not as wound up as he was for the Blamey because he’s got a fair campaign ahead of him,” he said.
“He is going very well, whether they’ll be too sharp for him over 1400 metres I don’t know…it wouldn’t surprise me if he won but it wouldn’t surprise me if he was running on at the end and ran a nice fifth.”
Boosting Green Moon’s chances on Saturday will be the services of star jockey Craig Williams who will be riding him for just the second time when he jumps from barrier five.
The only other time Williams rode the talented import was in March when he beated Pied A Terre by a length to win the Blamey Stakes.
