Bumper Slickpix Stakes 2012 Final Field Announced

A full field of spring staying types has been accepted into this Saturday’s 2012 Slickpix Stakes, the handicap clash one of the key races at Caulfield Racecourse for Memsie Stakes Day.

Set to run as Caulfield Race 7 at 4:10pm the $120,000 Listed Slickpix Stakes (1700m) has drawn a full field of 16 starters plus two emergencies, the feature to serve as a nice lead-up for the longer distance gallopers this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Topping the Slickpix Stakes 2012 field and weights is Michael Kent’s Cranbourne-based hopeful Unusual Suspect (59kg) who races in Australia for the first time since Melbourne Cup Day last year.

A Grade 1 winner in the USA where they were bred and where they started their career the now nine-year-old stallion ran sixth and ninth respectively in last year’s Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup before being sent to Dubai for their next campaign.

They return to the turf down under on Saturday as the 59kg topweight having been nominated for a number of spring majors in Sydney and Melbourne this year including The Metropolitan at Randwick, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate 2012.

“He’s ready to race, hopefully he’ll race well,” Kent said of Unusual Suspect.

Among their most notable Slickpix Stakes rivals on the weekend are the likes of last year’s Bendigo Cup winner Tanby (57.5kg) coming off a fourth over 1519m at Moonee Valley from last weekend, and Mark Webb’s veteran mare Avienus (55kg) who was runner-up to Descarado in the Caulfield Stakes last spring.

Meanwhile horses coming into the race on the back of some good form include the Darren Weir-trained Streets Away after their third on the trot this month when they jump from barrier three with Nicholas Hall in the saddle, and the ultra-consistent Banca Mo (barrier 4) from the Tasmanian stables of David & Scott Brunton.

Five-year-old Tough Speed gelding Banca Mo has also won their past two starts most recently by a collective 11 lengths, most recently beating home The Cleaner by three over 2040m at Moonee Valley on August 4.

Other notable hopefuls include Tony McEvoy’s classy French import Sysmo who was a late entry into the 2012 Caulfield Cup this week, and Michael Moreoney’s SA Derby runner-up Sabrage looking to improve on their first-up 11th at Flemington earlier this month as they go up in distance.
