Late entries for the first of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival majors closed today with two more hopefuls added into the 2012 Caulfield Cup equation.
Run on Saturday October 20 at Caulfield Racecourse the $2.65 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) originally attracted 220 early nominations, that figure now up to 222 with French champion Reliable Man who was announced last week, and the Tony McEvoy-trained French import Sysmo both late additions.
Dalakhani four-year-old Reliable Man is prepared by trainer Alain De Royer Dupre and is a stablemate of 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americain who will return to Australia this spring looking to improve on their eye-catching fourth to Dunaden in last year’s Melbourne Cup.
Reliable Man was last seen running a close fourth to Danedream in the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2414m) at Royal Ascot on July 21, the stallion an elite level winner in France as a three-year-old last year.
Sysmo meanwhile joined McEvoy’s Adelaide stables at the start of the year after starting their career with three good runs under Jean-Marie Beguigne in France.
In their Australian debut the lightly-raced My Risk four-year-old scored a good win over 1400m at Morphettville in February before a disappointing second-up effort when a distant sixth over 1800m at the same track a fortnight later.
Resuming for the spring Sysmo ran fifth to Shanghai Warrior in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) on a soft Flemington track on August 11 after coming from the back of the field, an effort McEvoy is confident they will improve on as they step up in distance.
Sysmo is also nominated for the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 27, but they are a $1,001 roughie in the Cox Plate odds at bookmaker.com.au.
They will race second-up at Caulfield this Saturday in the $120,000 Listed Slickpix Stakes (1700m).
Futures Caulfield Cup betting markets are really starting to heat up at bookmaker.com.au, Reliable Man and Sysmo to be priced and put up shortly.
Caulfield Cup 2012 first acceptances will be taken on Tuesday September 11 narrowing down the list of hopefuls after the Caulfield Cup weights are released next Wednesday September 5 by Racing Victoria’s General Manager of Racing and Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter.
