Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Peter Moody’s former spruik youngster Moment Of Change kicked off their four-year-old campaign in fine style over the weekend and will start serious 2012 Epsom Handicap preparations after the first-up success.
The $50,000 bargain buy from the 2010 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sales hit the headlines this time last year when their 10 length win on debut at Murtoa was backed up by an equally impressive four length Sandown success.
Their autumn campaign however was disappointing and Moment Of Change failed in three first-up runs, including a below par 12th to Mosheen in the Randwick Guineas, before winning a no-name handicap at Caulfield over 1400m on April 7.
After a big four and a half month break to mature the Barley A Moment gelding returned at Warwick Farm on Saturday and scored a nice one and a quarter length victory as the $1.75 favourite over the Joe Pride-trained Title ($8) in the Listed Show County Quality (1200m) – Somepin Anypin ($13) finishing off the winning trifecta a quarter length further back in third.
“He used to go a bit hard but he relaxed really well today,” winning jockey Peter Robl said after the race.
“He is a horse with a lot of scope.”
Connections were quick to name the $500,000 Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick on October 6 as Moment Of Change’s major Sydney Spring Racing Carnival target, after which a trip to Melbourne could be on the cards.
“He didn’t have a good preparation last time so it’s good to start off like this,” Moody’s Sydney stable representative Clare Cunningham said on Saturday.
“There are a few options but the main goal here is the Epsom.”
If they continue to impress then races like the $400,000 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on October 13, and even the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 27 could be on the cards.
“He could go to Melbourne for the Toorak Handicap and the Cox Plate if he gets that far,” Cunningham added.
Currently Moment Of Change is a $34 chance in the futures Cox Plate odds at bookmaker.com.au, markets led by Gai Waterhouse’s multiple Group 1 winning stablemates More Joyous ($7) and Pierro ($7.50).
