2012 The Run To The Rose Nominations – Pierro v All Too Hard

Nominations for The Run To The Rose 2012 at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse this Saturday have now been taken with boom colts Pierro and All Too Hard headlining the early entries.

Pierro is set to jump favourite in the 2012 The Run To The Rose on Saturday

With just nine three-year-olds nominated for this year’s edition of the $125,000 Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m) Racing NSW has extended entries until 11:00am on Tuesday.

Sure-to-be favourite for the sprint showdown, which serves as a lead-up run for many horses heading towards the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) back at the track on September 15, is Gai Waterhouse’s unbeaten son of Lonhro Pierro.

Winner of the Golden Slipper, and the two other legs of the autumn two-year-olds’ triple crown last season, Pierro races first-up in The Run To The Rose but is an unlikely Golden Rose 2012 contender.

Instead the $2.9 million earner will be sent straight to Victoria for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival where their major assignments are the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) in October.

History is certainly up against Pierro this campaign as no Golden Slipper has gone onto win a Cox Plate while only four have saluted in the Caulfield Guineas over the years.

It is also a history-defying task ahead of him on Saturday as the books say that first-up as three-year-olds Golden Slipper winners just don’t usually cut it.

Waterhouse however remains confident that Pierro is a special horse set to break the hoodoo.

“He will run in the Run To The Rose, it is an ideal race for him,” she said.

“He is ready and it fits in well with his program.”

The other major player in The Run To The Rose this year is then the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes trained Casino Prince colt All Too Hard who will be after The Run To The Rose – Golden Rose double completed 12 months ago by Manawanui.

A half-brother to mighty mare Black Caviar, All Too Hard first met Pierro during the autumn when the previously undefeated youngster finished one and three quarter lengths away second to them in the Group 1 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.

All Too Hard resumed at Roseill on August 18 when finishing a somewhat disappointing third to Snitzerland in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m).

They are however tipped to improve as they step up in distance throughout their campaign starting with Saturday and team Hawkes aren’t backing down from the challenge.

“We can’t be afraid of any horse with him,” co-trainer Michael Hawkes said.

“He has trained on really well from that first run and will be better again on the weekend.”

With Pierro having been taken out of the futures Golden Rose odds at bookies around the country this week, All Too Hard is the dominant $2.50 favourite for the season’s opening Group 1.

They won’t however start favourite in The Run To The Rose betting markets this weekend.

The next shortest-priced Golden Rose hopeful that features in The Run To The Rose nominations is then Anthony Cummings’ Fastnet Rock colt Your Song ($12).

Your Song, paying $12 to win the Golden Rose, won their past two starts over 1300m and 1400m respectively in Sydney during the winter on wet tracks and will be tested when they go first-up over a shorter distance on what is going to be a much firmer track.

Cummings also plans to run $15 Golden Rose chance Ninth Legion in Saturday’s feature, the fellow Fastnet Rock colt last seen running a credible fourth to Snitzerland in the San Domenico.

Other notable The Run To The Rose entries for 2012 include the Peter Snowden-trained Commands colt Epaulette who hasn’t raced since their dead last finish in the Golden Slipper, and John O’Shea’s Group 3 winner Ashokan.
