This Saturday the Peter Snowden-trained Tatra will kick start their Sydney Spring Racing Carnival campaign at Warwick Farm, the promising colt to target the Spring Champion Stakes 2012 in October.
The Hussonet colt hasn’t raced since their third place finish behind undefeated champ Pierro in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Sydney Cup Day on April 28, Snowden selecting the $125,000 Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) for their resuming run on the weekend.
Tatra hasn’t won a race since their successful debut at Rosehill in October last year, and they will have a tough first-up task having been allocated the 58kg topweight of the 10-horse Up & Coming Stakes 2012 field.
Still it isn’t Saturday’s race that Snowden most wants the youngster to succeed in but their spring grand final, the $400,000 Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on Epsom Handicap Day, October 6.
“I think he’s en route to the Spring Champion,” Snowden said.
“I think he’s definitely going to be a horse that when he gets out over a bit of ground you’ll see the best of him.
“He only got to a mile (1600m) last time in and ran third in the Champagne Stakes.
“He’s a nice horse that has come back well.”
Snowden certainly knows what it takes to prepare a Spring Champion Stakes winner too having taken out two of the past four editions of the classic with Erewhon (2010) and Sousa (2008).
In the Up & Coming Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au Tatra (barrier three) is rated a $15 chance.
Markets are firmly led by Gai Waterhouse’s lightly-raced More Than Ready colt Sumarand at $2.10 with other top fancies including Tatra’s better fancied stablemate Albrecht ($5), smart local hopeful Urquidez ($8) coming off a second to She’s A Fox in The Rosebud, and the David Pfieffer-trained Nediym’s Quest ($8).
As for his Redoute’s Choice colt Albrecht, whose unraced mother O’Giselle is a full sister to the mighty Lonhro, Snowden is yet to determine their spring carnival campaign but is confident they will be one of the best finishers on Saturday.
“You’ll see a fitter horse come Saturday,” Snowden said.
“We’ll see what he does on Saturday first but I’m happy with the way he has gone.
“He’ll run well on Saturday.”
