The James Cummings trained Impending added value...
Hard to handle gelding Dominant will begin a campaign geared towards the 2012 Caulfield Guineas when has the second start of his career tomorrow in the Listed 2012 McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.
The three-year-old has been a handful for Mornington trainer Matt Laurie in his young career but has always shown plenty of ability.
That ability was obvious when, despite being very green, the son of Not A Single Doubt finished second at Listed level on debut in April’s Redoute’s Choice Stakes.
Dominant is currently rated a $6.00 chance to record victory in the colts and geldings’ feature on Saturday with Peter Moody’s Liberty Rock the favourite at $4.00.
Following the gelding’s debut in April, Laurie elected to give him more time in the paddock to mature and while he still has a way to go, he has improved considerably.
“He’s much better now,” Laurie said.
“He can be a bit hot and from what I’m told that’s a Montjeu trait and he’s out of a Montjeu mare. So it might not be his fault.”
Laurie said he is hopeful the youngster can show the talent shown at home at the racetrack this weekend in order to earn his way into the Caulfield Guineas.
The McKenzie Stakes features a number of raw contenders including the favourite Liberty Rock who has had just two career starts.
The Rock Of Gibraltar colt won on debut in February before finishing second to All Too Hard in the Talindert Stakes.
Other horses contesting the McKenzie Stakes include unbeaten gelding Awesome Bro and Darley’s Rusambo.
