While on paper barrier one looks ideal for a horse to draw, jockey Nathan Berry is concerned the inside alley isn’t the best place for his mount Urquidez to be in Saturday’s Up & Coming Stakes 2012 at Warwick Farm.
One of 10 three-year-olds accepted for this year’s edition of the $125,000 Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m), the Jarred Austin-trained Street Sense colt Urquidez races third-up for the season in the early Sydney Spring Racing Carnival feature.
After a first-up win over 1100m at the track on July 28 with Berry in the saddle, Urquidez was last seen running second to She’s A Fox in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) at Warwick Farm with Blake Shinn aboard on August 11.
Berry reunites with them for the 2012 Up & Coming Stakes on the weekend, Urquidez to jump from gate one as they seek their maiden black-type victory.
“I’m a little worried about barrier one, I wouldn’t have minded drawing the middle,” Berry said.
“He is a big-striding horse and appreciates racing room.”
Although he harbours some concerns over the barrier, Berry knows Urquidez is still one of the rank horses in the race and is tipping them for bigger and better things throughout the season.
“I do think he is one of the class runners of the race,” he said.
“He gives you the feel of a quality animal. He has everything you want in a good horse, a lovely temperament, very strong, nice, big action and a very good turn of foot.
“If he is going to be a contender over the carnival he should win this race.”
Urquidez is currently rated an $8 chance in the Up & Coming Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au which are led by Gai Waterhouse’s promising youngster Sumarand ($2.10) who races for just the second time after a blistering five length win on debut at Hawkesbury on August 9.
