Gai Waterhouse’s lightly-raced colt Sumarand has opened the short-priced favourite in the 2012 Up & Coming Stakes odds for this Saturday’s three-year-olds’ handicap at Warwick Farm.
A total of 10 youngsters were accepted for this year’s edition of the $125,000 Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m), an event being used by a number of the hopefuls as a springboard into the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival’s maiden Group 1 showdown – the 2012 Golden Rose Stakes at Rosehill on September 15.
Heading the early Up & Coming Stakes betting markets at bookmaker.com.au is $2.05 favourite Sumarand who will be having just their second career start on Saturday.
The son of More Than Ready debuted at Hawkesbury on August 9 with a blistering five length success over 1300m when ridden by Nash Rawiller, Glyn Schofield to take over riding duties on Saturday.
Sumarand is also the shortest priced of the Up & Coming Stakes hopefuls heading towards the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) sitting at around $21 in the markets led by All Too Hard.
There are then three other single figure chances in the Up & Coming Stakes odds 2012 with:
- #4 Albrecht ($5) – Peter Snowden’s Redoute’s Choice colt won on debut back in June before a last start third in a Canterbury Inglis Bonus, has barrier 10 to overcome and would prefer a bit of give in the ground
- #3 Urquidez ($8) – Promising Street Sense colt enjoyed a big win at Warwick Farm over 1100m first-up on July 28 and then crossed second behind She’s A Fox in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) at the track on August 11, going up in distance should suit and can handle this class
- #5 Nediym’s Quest ($8) – David Pfieffer-trained colt had a shocking debut in the wet back in March but won first-up at Newcastle in August on firmer ground, goes up in class for this but has promise
Other longer priced hopefuls that could prove the value bet of the day include Snowden’s Champagne Stakes third placegetter Tatra ($15) drawn ideally in gate three but who has the 58kg topweight to overcome, and the Anthony Cummings-trained Calamba ($16) in barrier two who is a 2012 Thousand Guineas hopeful for Melbourne.
