Talented filly Ichihara appears to be the best chance of upsetting odds-on favourite Nechita in Saturday’s Group 3 2012 Silver Shadow Stakes at Warwick Farm.
The Allan Denham-trained three-year-old is currently second best in the market at $5.00 behind the highly-rated favourite who is being offered at $1.95.
Ichihara excelled as a two-year-old, winning the first three starts of her career including the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes before finishing third in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes.
The daughter of General Nediym has not raced since April but has trialled twice and Denham is confident she is ready to perform first-up on Saturday.
“She’s done with her spell, she’s had two barrier trials…probably like half the field she lacks race condition but I’ve got her as good as I can,” Denham said.
Ichihara drew barrier one for the three-year-old fillies’ feature and Denham said it is exactly where he’d like her to be.
“I won’t be swapping it for any other one,” he joked.
The Wyong-based trainer also takes confidence from the fact a number of rival horses will use the run as a leadup to longer races in the spring but his stable star will be racing at her pet distance.
Apart from Nechita, Ichihara will also have to overcome Single Style who also impressed during an autumn two-year-old campaign.
The Not A Single Doubt filly beat Driefontein in the Listed Keith Mackay Quality in April and trainer Gary Portelli is confident she can build on that form as a three-year-old.
“All her work has been good and we’re pretty excited about her chances,” Portelli said.
