Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Michael Moroney’s untapped stallion African Pulse will shoot for their second win from as many starts this time in when they take on a quality field of rivals in the 2012 Carlyon Stakes at Moonee Valley Racecourse.
A Melbourne Cup Day winner last spring, the now four-year-old son of Johannesburg resumed at Flemington on August 11 and enjoyed a strong victory over 1000m in the wet.
They will now step up to stakes company but stick to the short sprint distance for the $120,000 Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) on Saturday, a race that has drawn a full field of 13 starters plus two emergencies.
Despite their horror outside draw (15 of 15) African Pulse has opened the favourite in the Carlyon Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au paying $3.90.
The barrier is obviously a concern for Moroney who confirmed the favourite will only run if it’s a wet track, African Pulse to be saved for the $120,000 Listed The Heath (1100m) at Caulfield next week if the conditions don’t suit.
“It doesn’t especially suit us, but it might scare a few others off and give us a better draw,” Moroney said of the barrier.
Hot on their heels is then Atomic Force ($4.20) in gate seven with the 60kg topweight.
Winner of the Group 1 The Galaxy in April last year, Darren Smith’s Danehill Dancer seven-year-old recently enjoyed more elite level success when a trip to New Zealand in January resulted with a Group 1 Railway Stakes win and a second to Guiseppina in the Group 1 Telegraph Handicap.
Three other horses are rated single-figure chances in the Carlyon Stakes betting markets with:
- #2 Anabandana ($9) – Dual Group 1 winning New Zealand mare boasts a sensational record at home, had two runs in Melbourne during the Autumn for a second and fifth at Caulfield, resumes here and has a great first-up record plus plenty of class
- #3 Unanimously ($9) – Matthew Dale’s Canberra galloper comes off a good second over the track and distance which was their first look at Moonee Valley, should improve on that run here
- #6 Green Birdie ($9) – Internationally performed veteran has had three runs back in Australia this year most recently finishing fourth in the Aurie’s Star Handicap at Flemington, the nine-year-old has the experience and record but could be just past it
Other genuine chances at juicer odds then include the Darren Weir-trained Royal Bender ($11) last seen finishing second to Platelet in the Monash Stakes over 1100m in the wet at Caulfield in mid-July, Peter Moody’s lightly-raced Encosta De Lago mare One Last Dance ($12) having just her fifth career start after suffering her first career loss at the track on August 4, and Royal Bender’s stablemate Broken ($16).
