Darley gelding Pinwheel will get the opportunity to build on his first-up victory in the Missile Stakes when he lines up in a competitive field in the Group 2 2012 Warwick Stakes (1400m) on Saturday.
A stable favourite of trainer Peter Snowden, Pinwheel is nearing $1 million in prize money and has been a consistent performer throughout his career.
The seven-year-old has won 11 of 33 starts and was particularly impressive first-up when winning the Missile Stakes by two lengths ahead of Centennial Park and Rolling Pin.
The son of Lonhro won the Warwick Stakes last year and while Snowden admits it will be a tougher task this time he is confident the horse is in good order.
“This Saturday is a little bit harder [than last year] but he’s going into the race in good form,” Snowden said.
“His work was good this morning and he’s in good order.”
A 16-horse list of nominations was announced earlier this week for the weight-for-age feature including Peter Moody-trained mare Lights Of Heaven.
Lights Of Heaven has been tipped as one of the few Australian horses to play a role in the major spring cups and is returning from a spell after an impressive winter in Brisbane.
The daughter of Zabeel finished a close runner-up to Mawingo in the Group 1 Doomben Cup before dominating both the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup and the Group 2 Brisbane Cup.
Also nominated for the Warwick Stakes are Queensland pair Bold Glance and Startsmeup, 2011 Epsom winner Secret Admirer and Australian Derby runner-up Polish Knight.
