She may have just one career start to her name but Patinack filly Nechita is set to start among the favourites in Saturday’s Group 3 2012 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m).
The Fastnet Rock three-year-old burst on to the scene as a two-year-old in June when she won by nearly four lengths at Warwick Farm on debut.
So impressive was the youngster’s performance that bookmakers acted swiftly to install her as fifth favourite ($11.00) in the market for the $1 million Golden Rose.
The exciting filly had just three weeks in the paddock following her debut and returned impressively to win a barrier trial at Randwick earlier this month.
Trainer John Thompson said Nechita had filled out during her brief spell in the paddock and is expecting her to perform well ahead of a big spring.
“She’s done well. She only had three and a bit weeks out in the paddock,” Thompson said.
“She’s filled out a bit…she looks good, we’re happy with her.”
Christian Reith rode her in trackwork for the first time yesterday and he will again be in the saddle this weekend.
While the initial plan for Nechita is to run in the Princess Series for fillies in Sydney, Thompson said he would consider changing plans if she performed exceptionally on Saturday.
“At this stage the plan is for the Princess Series. If she happened to run very well on Saturday we may think about going straight to the Golden Rose but it’s all about Saturday at this point,” Thompson said.
Nechita will face a quality field of fillies in her first-up test including the in-form She’s A Fox and the Gary Portelli-trained Single Style.
