Second Effort Relishes Conditions to Win 2012 PB Lawrence Stakes

The impressive wet-track form of Second Effort continued on Saturday as he scored a comfortable win in the Group 2 2012 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

A winner of nine of 22 career starts, eight of those wins have come on tracks slow or worse and he appreciated the cold, wet Melbourne weather to record his first victory at group level.

Trained by Clinton McDonald, Second Effort finished the race off strongly to win by more than a length ahead of Zamorar and Ready To Rip.

It was the second win in the event for McDonald whose star Regal Roller took top honours eight years earlier.

While McDonald admitted Second Effort didn’t have the talent of Regal Roller he is thrilled to have him as part of the stable.

“He’s no Regal Roller, but I’m very proud of him,” McDonald said.

Experienced Victorian jockey Chris Symons was riding the six-year-old for just the second time and is hoping he will get further opportunities aboard the son of Mossman.

“I’m just hoping I get another ride on this horse,” Symons said.

It is not clear yet where Second Effort will head to next but McDonald did not indicate that he would be spelled despite having raced throughout the winter.

Star Perth galloper Luckygray tried hard but was unable to show his typical turn of foot in the heavy going and eventually finished in fourth position.

It is believed Luckygray will have his second run in the Victorian capital on Saturday week in the Memsie Stakes (1400m) before going to the Dato’ Chin Nam Stakes a fortnight later.
