Lady Melksham Takes Out 2012 Cockram Stakes

Exciting four-year-old Lady Melksham was too strong for her more experienced rivals in Saturday’s Group 3 2012 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Lady Melksham was impressive when winning the Cockram Stakes on Saturday

Having just her second hitout at stakes level, the John Sadler-trained sprinter was dominant at the back end of the race and produced a fast finish to win by half a length ahead of Le Societe and Glows.

The daughter of Artie Schiller showed her appreciation for wet tracks to record her fourth career victory from five starts.

Of those four wins, three have come on tracks rated slow or worse and she has now collected more than $160,000 in prize money.

Sadler said he would wait and see how the talented mare pulled up before deciding on further spring plans.

“It will be interesting to see how these horses generally come out of today,” Sadler said.

“We’ll be pretty careful with her, as to whether she has another run or whether she might go out and tackle something a little later in the spring.”

The Flemington-based trainer said Saturday’s win was special as he had also trained her grand-dam Goble who secured him his first Group victory.

“It was a really important win for the stable and for the owners,” Sadler said.

Lady Melksham started as $3.50 favourite in the mares’ feature and rewarded punters, never looking troubled in the final stages of the race.

Le Societe fought hard to claim her second stakes level placing while Glows backed up a last-start win to finish in third.

Heavily backed Adelaide fourth placegetter Avoid Lightning struggled to keep up with the pace early in the race and was unable to catch the leaders in the final straight.
