Seventeen promising three-year-olds have been nominated for this Saturday’s Up & Coming Stakes 2012 which is one of three Group features to run at Warwick Farm Racecourse.
Won 12 months ago by subsequent Golden Rose winner Manawanui, the $125,000 Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) is an important lead-up for youngsters looking to feature prominently during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
The top-rated Up & Coming Stakes nominee this year is Anthony Cummings’ flying Fastnet Rock filly She’s A Fox who has won both of her new season starts at Warwick Farm.
Last seen taking out the Listed The Rosebud (1200m), She’s A Fox is likely to skip the Up & Coming and run one of the day’s other races sticking to her own kind in the $125,000 Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m).
Cummings could still be nicely represented in the Up & Coming Stakes this year however having also nominated for Calamba and Your Song.
Bernardini filly Calamba was last seen breaking their maiden status at start number four at Randwick over 1300m back in May, while Your Song is out for her third win on the trot.
The promising Fastnet Rock colt is nominated for a number of the spring majors including the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 13 after winning two of their opening three career starts.
A known mudlark Your Song was last seen beating a decent field over 1400m at Rosehill on a Heavy (9) track on July 7 and is the shortest-priced of the Up & Coming Stakes nominees, excluding She’s A Fox ($6) in the futures Golden Rose odds at bookmaker.com.au at a quote of $12.
The $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) runs at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday September 15 and is the likely target for the majority of the Up & Coming Stakes hopefuls who will be looking to emulate Manawanui in winning the double again this year.
Meanwhile here are two other last-start winners among the 2012 Up & Coming Stakes entries with the David Pfieffer-trained Nediym’s Quest and Gai Waterhouse’s More Than Ready colt Sumarand.
Sumarand only made their debut at Hawkesbury on August 9 but showed plenty of early promise beating home their rivals by an emphatic five lengths over the 1300m.
Other notable hopefuls include Peter Snowden’s lightly-raced Redoute’s Choice colt Albrecht paying $34 to win the Golden Rose next month, their stablemate Tatra who ran third to Pierro in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes over the Randwick mile last time out, and recent The Rosebud runner-up Urquidez from the local stables of Jarrod Austin.
