Satin Shoes Heads 2012 Starlight Stakes Field & Odds

Clarry Conners’ Group 1 placed mare Satin Shoes will begin her new season preparation this Saturday in the Starlight Stakes 2012 at Rosehill Gardens, the four-year-old opening top of the markets for the quality handicap feature.

Satin Shoes

Satin Shoes resumes racing in the 2012 Starlight Stakes this Saturday

Third to the since retired superstar Sepoy in the Coolmore Stud Stakes last Victoria Derby Day, the daughter of Flying Spur hasn’t won a race since her victory at Caulfield in mid-October the run prior to her Group 1 minor placing.

Last time out Satin Shoes failed to impress when beating home just one other runner to finish 12th to Sea Siren in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on May 12, but her four-time Golden Slipper winning trainer Conners is confident the punters will see improvement on that run this weekend.

One of two black-types running at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday along with the $125,000 Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m), the $100,000 Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) has drawn a final field of nine hopefuls.

Topping the early Starlight Stakes odds at is Satin Shoes at a quote of $2.80 after she drew ideally with barrier one.

Conners has engaged the services of Nash Rawiller to ride his mare on Saturday, Satin Shoes having impressed in a trial between races last Saturday.

“I only gave her the one trial because I was so happy with it,” Conners said.

“She’s drawn barrier one and we’ve got Nash Rawiller on.

“He rode her the other day and said she felt great.

“It’s an ideal race for her to start off with.

“I’m pretty happy with her. She starts off pretty big but that’s the horse.

“You can’t put all your eggs in one basket at the first start (of the preparation) but I think she’s done enough to be competitive.”

Satin Shoes, who also boasts an excellent first-up record and loves the 1100m, is followed in the markets by three other single-figure chances with:

  • #4 See The World ($4.20) – Joe Pride’s smart Danzero six-year-old was in flying form through the winter and should have been three from three had they not travelled four wide before being beaten a long neck in the Winter Stakes last time out, get a draw here (2) and is the obvious danger
  • #2 Skytrain ($5.50) – Peter Snowden’s Lonhro seven-year-old has a great record at the track and is classy but would probably prefer the track to have a bit of the sting out of it to be really competitive
  • #8 Social Rank ($9) – Paul Perry-trained Stratum gelding resumes after a lengthy spell before which they won back-to-back races at Wyong and Warwick Farm during the summer, has only been to the track once when fifth over 1100m back in December but isn’t without their chances over the short distance

Other longer priced hopefuls not without their claims for an upset then include Gerald Ryan’s General Nediym mare Mrs Onassis ($10) who won at the track and distance on Boxing Day, and David Hayes’ former Group 1 winner Eagle Falls ($14) second up for the season after a credible first-up sixth at Moonee Valley on August 4.
