Ortensia On Track For Group 1 Glory At York

Ortensia is set to continue her overseas campaign in the aim of claiming the third Group 1 of her career.

After an uncharacteristic ninth placing in the Group 1 King Stand Stakes at Ascot in June, Ortenisa went on to place a pleasing fourth in the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket.

Perseverance paid off for Ortensia when she won her first English title in the Group 2 King George Stakes at Goodwood earlier this month.

Ortensia will be out to secure her third career Group 1 in as many countries when she runs in the 2012 Nunthorpe Stakes at York.

Trainer Paul Messara is set to travel to England this weekend in order to continue her training.

The talented seven-year-old mare will be prepared for the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York Racecourse on August 24, 2012.

Messara has so far had to train from afar, however, is impressed with what he has been told over the phone.

“The reports are really good. She worked on Tuesday morning and worked really well,” Messara said.

“She has come through the last race extremely well and as long as we get a dry track she’ll be very hard to beat.

“She’s close to favouritism now in the market.”

The biggest dangers in the 2012 Nunthorpe Stakes field are expected to be Sole Power and Bated Breath.

“They are probably the best two other sprinters over there,” the trainer said.

“She beat Sole Power in Dubai and she’ll have a chance to beat Bated Breath hopefully on Friday.

“She meets all the horses she beat last start seven pounds (3kg) better.”

Ortensia won her first group 1 race start in the Winterbottom Stakes in Perth last November, before going on to claim victory in Dubai’s Al Quoz Sprint at her next start.

The Testa Rossa mare has won 12 of her 33 race starts and earned more than $2.1 million in prize money.
