Cockram Stakes 2012 – Final Field and Barrier Draw

Multiple Group 1 winner Yosei heads a quality field of mares named to run in the Group 3 2012 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Yosei is the top nomination for the Cockram Stakes

The Stuart Webb-trained five-year-old will be having her first start since an autumn campaign that was highlighted by a third-place finish in the Doncaster Mile.

Webb will be hoping the daughter of Invincible Spirit can improve on her efforts last spring where she failed to finish better than seventh in four starts.

Despite having just four career victories to her name, Yosei has collected over $1 million prize money as a result of three top tier wins.

The talented mare won the Sires’ Produce Stakes as a two-year-old and had a brilliant three-year-old season with wins in both the Thousand Guineas and the Tattersall’s Tiara.

Whittlsea trainer Peter Morgan, who has recently formed a parternship with Craig Widdison, has two runners entered with Lucky Penny and Oasis Bloom.

Lucky Penny is unbeaten from three starts while Oasis Bloom will be having her first hitout since November last year.

Looking to score a fifth consecutive victory is Adelaide mare Avoid Lightning who recorded a breakthrough stakes win last month in the Lightning Stakes at Morphetville.

The daughter of Blevic produced a storming finish on a slow track to win the Listed event by 2 1/2 lengths.

Trainer Darren Jolly will be hoping the wet weather seen in Melbourne recently will hang around this weekend as Avoid Lightning has a flawless record in the wet.

Other horses included in the Cockram Stakes field are Peter Moody-trained Le Societe, last-start winner Glows and multiple black-type winner Hi Belle.
