Consistent Pinwheel Claims 2012 Missile Stakes

Darley gelding Pinwheel was at his consistent best on Saturday as he produced a strong first-up effort to win the Group 3 2012 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm.

Favourite Pinwheel was convincing when winning the Missile Stakes

Kerrin McEvoy rode the seven-year-old aggressively and it paid dividends as he took the lead in the early part of the straight before galloping clear to score a two-length victory ahead of Centennial Park and Rolling Pin.

It was the 11th win of Pinwheel’s career from 33 starts and the son of Lonhro is now closing in on $1 million in prize money.

Speaking after the race, trainer Peter Snowden described Pinwheel as a “favourite” in the stable following what was his fifth stakes victory.

“Every campaign he delivers and he is a proven weight-for-age horse,” Snowden said.

Pinwheel will now be aimed at the Group 2 Warwick Stakes on Saturday week where he is likely to face a far tougher field including star sprinter Rain Affair.

Snowden said he never expects Pinwheel to be a Group 1 winner but praised his ability to always produce his best.

“I don’t think he’s a Group One horse except maybe in a handicap but he’s a wonderful horse to have,” he said.

Despite consistent performances, it was the first-time Pinwheel had claimed victory since last year’s Warwick Stakes.

Taking runner-up honours was Centennial Park who was impressive in his first-up start after struggling during the autumn.

Gwenda Markwell’s gelding Rolling Pin also finished off the race well and was rewarded with a third-place finish.
