Cockram Stakes 2012 Nominations

A huge nominations list of 24 horses has been announced for Saturday’s Group 3 2012 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Yosei

Multiple Group 1 winner Yosei is nominated for the Cockram Stakes

There is no shortage of quality among the entries for the $150,000 mares-only event which includes multiple Group 1 winner Yosei.

The Stuart Webb-trained five-year-old may not have won since the 2011 Tattersall’s Tiara at Eagle Farm but she boasts wins in the Sires’ Produce Stakes as a two-year-old and the Thousand Guineas.

The daughter of Invincible Spirit will be having her first run since the Sydney Autumn Carnival where she finished third to More Joyous in the prestigious Doncaster Mile.

Whittlesea-based trainer Peter Morgan has nominated two of his emerging stars in unbeaten mare Lucky Penny and Oasis Bloom.

Lucky Penny, lightly raced for just three career starts, has been entered for the Caulfield Cup while Morgan rates Oasis Bloom as a Melbourne Cup prospect in 2013.

One nominated horse who has recent form behind her is South Australian mare Avoid Lightning who will be chasing a fifth consecutive victory if she lines up on Saturday.

The David Jolly-trained four-year-old has earned a nomination in the Group 3 event on the basis of a stunning last-start win in the Listed Lightning Stakes late last month.

Jolly will be hoping the weather that caused Saturday’s Flemington meeting to be run on a wet track can hang around this weekend as the daughter of Blevic is a proven wet-track performer.

Leading trainer Peter Moody has four of his charges entered including French mare Never Forget who is yet to start on Australian soil.

Other Moody runners nominated are former juvenile star One Last Dance, Total Attraction and Le Societe.

Also included in Cockram Stakes nominations are multiple stakes winner Hi Belle and last-start victor Glows.
