Pinwheel Tops Missile Stakes Odds 2012

Peter Snowden’s first-up genius Pinwheel will look to add another resuming win to their record when they kick off their spring carnival campaign in the 2012 Missile Stakes at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

Pinwheel

Pinwheel has opened the favourite in the 2012 Misslie Stakes odds for this Saturday

Seven-year-old Lonhro gelding Pinwheel is one of eight horses engaged in what is being called a fairly weak edition of the $125,000 Group 3 McGrath Missile Stakes (1200m) which is the opening Group race of the 2012 Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

Drawn in gate five with Kerrin McEvoy to ride, Pinwheel has opened the dominant favourite in the Missile Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au paying $2.40 to go two better than their third in this event 12 months ago.

They were last seen finishing a good fourth to Mid Summer Music in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival on June 9, and the two months between runs looks ideal for the evergreen veteran.

Pinwheel has had five first-up runs over their career to date recording three wins and a second, and they are also well suited to the Warwick Farm 1200m where they boast a first and a second place finish from their two runs over the track and distance.

There are three other Missile Stakes hopefuls under $10 in the markets currently with:

  • #2 Title ($3.80) – Smart Honors List six-year-old looking to hand Joe Pride back-to-back Missile Stakes wins following the success of Rain Affair last year, last seen finishing one and a quarter lengths off the winner Temple Of Boom in the Group 1 Galaxy at Randwick in April
  • #3 Centennial Park ($6.50) – David Payne-trained seven-year-old hasn’t won a race since February 2011, fifth in this race last year and while the class has dropped it’s hard to see them finishing better than that again despite their price
  • #6 Welkom Gold ($6.50) – Lesser-known Johannesburg eight-year-old from Broadmeadow, is a stakes winner in Sydney and looked good last Saturday when second to Randwick Guineas runner-up Said Com over 1250m at Canterbury

Other longer-priced fancies with claims for an upset Missile Stakes result on Saturday include Gerald Ryan’s recent Ascot Handicap winner Adnocon ($11) and the Gwenda Markwell-trained Rolling Pin ($13) out to improve on their dead last finish at Rosehill back in March when unsuited to the Heavy (9) track.
