Green Birdie Flying Toward Aurie’s Star Handicap 2012

Tony Vasil’s globetrotting veteran galloper Green Birdie will be looking to finally post another win down under when they line-up in Saturday’s 2012 Aurie’s Star Handicap at Flemington Racecourse.

Kicking off the black-type racing action of the 2012 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the $150,000 Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) has this year attracted 13 good runners including nine-year-old Catbird gelding Green Birdie.

Drawn ideally in barrier two with Damien Oliver to ride them on the 58.5kg second topweight, Green Birdie races for the third time this preparation having only recently returned from a five year international racing career based in Hong Kong.

Since being back in the Australian racing scene Caulfield-based Vasil has sung Green Birdie nothing but praise.

Unfortunately for the punters tuning into his song the old horse has failed to live up to the hype their trainer has been creating so far.

First-up after seven months out of racing they ran seventh to Platelet on in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) when drawn in barrier 15 of 15 on a Heavy (9) track.

“We had no choice but to go right back to last in his first-up run,” Vasil said of Green Birdie’s run in the Monash from the horror gate.

“He ran very well, but it gave him no chance.”

They improved second-up when fourth to Ready To Rip on the Group 3 Bletchinlgy Stakes (1200m) back at Caulfield on July 18 but still couldn’t get the job done due to the slow pace of the race.

“It didn’t suit him at all,” Vasil said.

“I think he needs to balance up and come late, but not from last.”

Now Vasil is hoping for more on Saturday in the Aurie’s Star where Oliver should get every chance from two on the horse.

Green Birdie is one of the top four fancies in the Aurie’s Star Handicap betting odds at bookmaker.com.au paying $8.

Only Peter Moody’s promising four-year-old Golden Archer ($2.10) and the ultra-consistent Zamorar ($4) are above them in the markets.
