Golden Archer Heads 2012 Aurie’s Star Handicap Odds

Peter Moody’s untapped four-year-old Golden Archer has opened the pronounced favourite to win the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival’s opening Group race and take home the Aurie’s Star Handicap 2012 at Flemington this Saturday.

Golden Archer

Golden Archer is the short-priced favourite to win the 2012 Aurie's Star Handicap this weekend

The Rock Of Gibraltar stallion was sidelined with injury for 10 months, missing out on a chance to campaign in the UK with their star stablemate Black Caviar earlier this year.

They returned at Flemington on June 21 however with a tidy two length victory in a 1000m handicap and this weekend they will shoot for back-to-back wins when they line-up in the $150,000 Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m).

One of 13 classy acceptors for the handicap clash, Golden Archer will be ridden by Black Caviar’s regular rider Luke Nolen from barrier four and is dominating the early Aurie’s Star Handicap odds at bookmaker.com.au paying $2.10.

Just three of their rivals are also under $10 in the Aurie’s Star betting at this stage with:

  • #6 Zamorar ($4) – David Bourne’s four-year-old from Seymor has been in flying form since their debut in August last year finishing to four in all 11 of their career starts, most recently when second to Ready To Rip in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, likes it wet but can handle a firmer track as well, also Group 1 performed (fourth to Sepoy in the 2001 Coolmore Stud Stakes) at Flemington, will take some beating
  • #2 Green Birdie ($8) – Veteran Catbird nine-year-old has been back in Oz after years campaigning overseas for just two runs leading up to this, their last a fourth in the Bletchinlgy, Tony Vasil says they are getting better and better and he could be right this time
  • #9 Shanghai Warrior ($8) – Pat Hyland-trained Elvstroem stallion comes off a last start win at the track over 1100m on July 21, gets a draw with barrier five and is on the 54kg minimum

The only other runner under $20 in the markets is then stakes winning galloper in Adelaide Balzeus paying $12.
