Rekindled Interest is on track for his 2012 Cox Plate target after impressing during trackwork at Moonee Valley on the weekend.
The Jim Conlan-trained five-year-old worked between races during Saturday’s card and the Mornington trainer was thrilled with how he performed.
“He was terrific, he loves the Valley,” Conlan said.
“It would take a pretty good horse to work much better than he does when he gets out to the Valley.
“He pulled up very well which is the most important part of it and he’s now ready to go racing.”
The 2011 Cox Plate placegetter will begin his spring preparation on Saturday week in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) before embarking on a campaign similar to last year.
Conlan outlined his success at Moonee Valley as the reason to again head to the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) before chasing success in Australia’s weight-for-age championship.
“His best performances have been his 1600m and 2000m races at the Valley,” Conlan said.
“I’ve worked a program out around using those type of races, one being the Dato which he won last year and six weeks after that is the Cox Plate.”
Conlan said he would leave his options open as to whether Rekindled Interest will have a third run before the Cox Plate.
After a successful spring campaign that also saw the son of Redoute’s Choice place in the Mackinnon Stakes he was unable to replicate that form in the autumn.
The five-year-old experienced some success when a close runner-up in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes but was well outside the placings in both the Group 1 William Reid Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
