A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Just eight horses have been accepted for the Missile Stakes 2012 at Warwick Farm on Saturday in what looks to be one of the weakest editions of the weight-for-age race, the opening Group status event of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, in many years.
The top-rated entry in this year’s $125,000 Group 3 McGrath Missile Stakes (1200m), set to run as Warwick Farm Race 6 at 3:35pm, is the Peter Snowden-trained Pinwheel.
The smart Lonhro seven-year-old will shoot for their 11th win from 33 starts when they jump from barrier five on Saturday, Pinwheel last seen running a good fourth to Mid Summer Music in the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in Brisbane on June 9.
They have an excellent first-up record having won three of their five resuming runs so far, and are also a dual winner at Warwick Farm including their Group 2 Warwick Stakes success last August.
There are four other horses racing in the Missile Stakes first-up on Saturday including the Joe Pride-trained Title.
Local trainer Pride is vying for back-to-back Missile Stakes wins following the success of his subsequent dual Group 1 runner-up Rain Affair twelve months ago.
Six-year-old Honours List gelding Title, like Pinwheel, was also last seen running a brave fourth in an elite level when one and a quarter lengths off winner Temple Of Boom in The Galaxy (1100m) at Randwick back in April.
Title’s first-up record isn’t quite as impressive as Snowden’s horse’s however with just one win from six attempts.
The only other horse in the Missile Stakes field with previous winning form at Warwick Farm is the Gwenda Markwell-trained Rolling Pin who will be ridden by Nash Rawiller from barrier three on Saturday.
The other more notable hopefuls then include Gerald Ryan’s triple stakes winner Adnocon in gate four with Hugh Bowman to ride, the John Thompson-trained Encosta Dee Lago eight-year-old Tagus (barrier eight), and Welkom Gold (barrier 7) who comes off a second to Randwick Guineas runner-up Said Com over 1250m at Canterbury on August 4.
