South Australian gelding Alcopop will make a return to racing this weekend at his home track in Morphetville in the Group 3 $115,000 2012 Spring Stakes (1200m).
The Jake Stephens-trained gelding has not been seen since October last year when he laboured to finish ninth in the final hitout of his spring campaign in the Caulfield Stakes.
A son of Jeune, Alcopop is a multiple black-type winner and looks set to follow a similar route to last year’s spring campaign.
The eight-year-old began with a first-up fifth in the Spring Stakes at Morphetville in 2011 before winning the Listed Penny Edition Stakes and finishing runner-up in the Group 2 Dato’ Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley.
The former Melbourne Cup sixth then finished his campaign in disappointing fashion in the Caulfield Stakes.
Alcopop has won once at Group 2 level and a further three times in Listed races but despite numerous starts in the top grade is yet to claim Group 1 honours.
The closest the experience gelding has come to elite level success was in the 2010 Yalumba Stakes when he finished runner-up to dual Cox Plate champion So You Think.
All signs so far suggest that Alcopop is on the right track to add to his resume of nine wins from 26 starts this spring after he trialled solidly on Monday.
Also returning on Saturday in the Spring Stakes is Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed who will again be targeted at the prestigious spring feature.
The five-year-old mare will also start in the Penny Edition Stakes a fortnight later in Adelaide before heading to Melbourne to follow a similar campaign to last year beginning with the Stocks Stakes.
Markets will open in the next couple of days on all the major spring racing and bookmaker.com.au have sensational value odds.
