Zamorar Chasing Elusive Victory in 2012 Aurie’s Star Handicap

David Bourne-trained gelding Zamorar will be out to capitalise on his potential and score an elusive black-type victory on Saturday in the $150,000 Group 3 2012 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.

The four-year-old gelding has been ultra-consistent without being able to breakthrough recently, placing in his last three starts in black-type races.

The Seymour-based sprinter placed in both the Listed Creswick Stakes and Monash Stakes before again finishing runner-up in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes late last month.

From 11 starts in his career, Zamorar has won four times but has only finished outside the placings on two occasions.

The times he did finish outside the placings were only by small margins, running fourth to Sepoy and Foxwedge in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes last spring and again finishing fourth in the Group 2 Centrebet Classic in March.

Despite being unable to break through at stakes level, trainer David Bourne remains positive about Zamorar and praised his ability to perform consistently.

“It would be lovely if he could win a good race and it’s a testament to his honesty he’s going so well,” Bourne said.

There is no shortage of talent for the first group race of the season at Flemington with 22 horses yesterday nominated for the feature sprint.

Set to have the second start of his preparation is Peter Moody-trained mare Golden Archer who returned well from a long injury layoff last month when first in the Monjon Australia Handicap at Flemington.

The talented four-year-old has won seven from 11 starts, including four times in black-type races, with the highlight coming in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes last August.

Also nominated for Moody is Ready To Rip who is chasing a third consecutive victory under the leading Victorian trainer since joining his stable from Queensland earlier this year.

Betting will open later this week on the Aurie’s Star Handicap and bookmaker.com.au will have excellent prices.
