Rocket Man Could Race at 2012 Melbourne Spring Carnival

Champion Singapore sprinter Rocket Man is the latest horse to be touted as a Melbourne Spring Carnival possibility as a result of the world’s best sprinter Black Caviar being ruled out of the spring.

With interest from connections of foreign horses at unprecedented levels, Rocket Man trainer Patrick Shaw has indicated interest to Racing Victoria in both the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley in late October and the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) on November 10.

Rocket Man’s connections have shown they are not afraid of travel with the star sprinter having raced in Hong Kong, Dubai, Japan as well as at home in Singapore.

The Manikato Stakes and Patinack Farm Classic have become open races following confirmation of Black Caviar’s spring absence and Rocket Man has the record to suggest he would start among the favourites if he made the trip to Australia.

The seven-year-old boasts a highly successful resume of 20 wins from 26 starts including six victories at Group 1 level.

Highlight wins for the son of Viscount have come in the 2011 Golden Shaheen in Dubai and the 2011 Krisflyer International Sprint at Singapore’s Kranji racecourse.

Connections of Rocket Man’s stablemate, Ato, have also expressed interest in a Melbourne Spring Carnival tilt.

The South African-bred five-year-old won has won eight of 21 outings and has been in career best form this year.

A son of Royal Acadaemy, Ato has most recently been seen winning both the Group 1 Krisflyer International Sprint in May and the Group 1 Patron’s Bowl in June.

While Black Caviar and Hay List won’t be competing in either the Manikato Stakes or the Patinack Farm Classic, any international sprinters will face competitive fields if they decide to tackle the spring features.

Buffering has been confirmed as targeting both the Manikato and the Patinack while Sea Siren has the Manikato as her major spring target.
