Internationals Raid Caulfield Cup 2012 Nominations

Twenty-five internationally-trained horses have been nominated for the 2012 Caulfield Cup today after Racing Victoria received 222 early entries for the opening Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival major.

Due to run at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday October 20, the $2.65 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) attracted 22 fewer horses than last year but is certainly shaping up as an intriguing clash.

The Melbourne Racing Club’s Chief Executive Officer Alasdair Robertson described the 2012 Caulfield Cup as a “truly global event” following the large amount of international interest this year, which is seen as a big positive for the entire spring carnival.

“As the world’s richest turf handicap over the classic mile-and-a-half distance, and sitting in the top flight of races of any distance or surface worldwide in terms of prize money, plus already boasting multiple European-trained winners, the BMW Caulfield Cup is a truly global event,” Mr Robertson said.

“We’re very pleased with the initial reception to the BMW Caulfield Cup from both Australia and New Zealand and beyond,” Mr Robertson said.

“The international contingent is particularly exciting, providing further weight to the Caulfield Cup as a standalone international feature.”

Headlining the overseas Caulfield Cup nominees this year are eight French gallopers including the past two Melbourne Cup winners in Dunaden (2011) and Americain (2010).

Some of the other top international hopefuls among the Caulfield Cup nominations include the Mark Botti-trained Jakkalberry, Luca Cumani’s last start York winner Mount Athos and the fellow Aussie-owned Prairie Star.

Other OTI-owned Caulfield Cup hopefuls along with Prairie Star and Mount Athos include Quest For Peace and Ibicenco.

While the interest in the raiders is high it is Victorian mare Atlantic Jewel who is the early favourite in the Caulfield Cup odds.

Also nominated for the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at week later at Moonee Valley, Mark Kavanagh’s unbeaten four-year-old will be looking to add to her impressive seven-from-seven record this spring that also includes two Group 1 victories.

Other top fancies in the Caulfield Cup betting markets include the Anthony Freedman-trained Doomben Cup winner Mawingo, their star stablemate from Germany Lucas Cranach, four time Group 1 winning mare Mosheen, last year’s Caulfield Cup runner-up Green Moon, and the Peter Moody-trained duo of Lights Of Heaven and Brambles who won a whole host of Group races during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival between them including the Brisbane Cup and Queensland Derby.

Moody also has nominated for Voila Ici, the former Italian-trained seven-year-old last seen running a brave third in a Group 1 in Rome over 2010m, who is yet to race in Australia having only arrived on the same flight as Black Caviar from the UK last month.

Late Caulfield Cup nominations remain open until August 28 with Caulfield Cup weights to then be released on October 15.

First, second and third acceptances will then be taken on September 11, 15 and October 9 before the 2012 Caulfield Cup final field and barriers is officially announced on October 16 at 10am (local time).
