Southern Speed Heads 2012 Spring Stakes Nominations

Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed will begin spring preparations this weekend in the Group 3 $115,000 2012 Spring Stakes (1200m) at Morphetville.

Southern Speed

Southern Speed will return this Saturday in the Spring Stakes

One of 17 horses nominated for the Adelaide sprint, the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas-trained mare will be having her first run since finishing fifth in the BMW in April.

The talented five-year-old is again being aimed at the Caulfield Cup which she won by 1 1/2 lengths last year ahead of Green Moon and Tullamore.

Saturday’s first-up run is the first step on the road to back-to-back Caulfield Cup Glory and she will race again in Adelaide two weeks later in the Listed Penny Edition Stakes.

Also nominated to make their return is Jake Stephens-trained multiple black-type winner Alcopop who will be having his first race since October last year.

Despite being eight years old, Alcopop is relatively lightly raced and boasts a solid record of nine wins from 26 starts.

One horse heading into the race in excellent form is David Jolly-trained mare Avoid Lightning who picked up her first black-type victory late last month when winning the Listed Lightning Stakes.

The daughter of Blevic is chasing a fifth consecutive victory after showing plenty of potential in winning five of her six career starts.

Returning from a spell to chase a fourth consecutive win is Lloyd Kennewell gelding The Eighth Maker who was in scintillating form during the summer.

A winner of six of 14 starts, The Eighth Maker hit career best form last preparation and scored black-type victory in the Listed City Of Marion Stakes in December.

A son of Clangalang, the seven-year-old gelding generally performs first-up, having won once and placed twice when previously returning from a spell.

Also nominated for the Spring Stakes are Peter Moody-trained Justify That and Tony McEvoy-trained Candle.

When betting opens later this week, head to to back a great value winner.

The preferred bookie has a great range of racing products and offers a $300 bonus bet to first-time depositing customers.
