Rekindled Interest Gearing Up for 2012 Cox Plate

With the spring approaching, a number of the country’s leading horses are beginning to step out in public and one of those this Saturday will be Rekindled Interest who will be targeted at the 2012 Cox Plate (2040m).

Rekindled Interest will again be targeted at the Cox Plate

The Jim Conlan-trained gelding finished third to Pinker Pinker in the prestigious weight-for-age test last year and will have his first public gallop of the preparation prior to Saturday’s racing at Moonee Valley.

Despite the Cox Plate placing and a prize pool of more than $850,000, Rekindled Interest is yet to score elite-level success.

A son of Redoute’s Choice, the five-year-old has two Group 2 victories to his name and came within a head of taking Group 1 honours in April’s George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill.

While the lead-up schedule towards the Cox Plate is still uknown, one certainy for Rekindled Interest is his rider.

Dwayne Dunn has been in the saddle for 11 of the gelding’s 16 career starts and he will again take the reigns this spring.

Dunn recently finished third in the Victorian Jockey premiership and is excited accompanying Rekindled Interest for another spring campaign.

“I galloped him a week ago and I’m really happy with the way he’s progressed. Saturday will tell us where he’s really at,” Dunn said.

“Hopefully he can win his Group One this preparation.”

The Mornington-based gelding had a successful spring campaign last year, finishing a worst of fifth from six Melbourne outings.

After kicking off with a runner-up finish in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap, he finished fourth in the Memsie Stakes before winning the Group 2 Dato’ Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley.

His final three starts resulted in a Turnbull Stakes fifth and consecutive third placings in the Cox Plate and Mackinnon Stakes.

Rekindled Interest is currently being offered at $31.00 in the Cox Plate market and the Australian bookie has markets open for a number of spring feature races.
