A bigger, more mature Atlantic Jewel will be seen at this year’s 2012 Melbourne Spring Carnival with the unbeaten star having thrived during her time in the paddock.
Currently favourite for both the Cox Plate and the Caulfield Cup, Atlantic Jewel is likely to resume on August 18 in either the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) or the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m).
Already a two-time Group 1 winner, the four-year-old underwent an easy jumpout at Fleminton this morning, pleasing her training team.
Mark Kavanagh foreman Merv Harvey said the the daughter of Fastnet Rock would undergo a more testing hitout next Friday.
“It was an easy one for her today…we’ll have a good look at her next week,” Harvey said.
“She’s 20 kilos heavier than what she was in the autumn and she’s probably grown up a bit in the head as well.”
Harvey confirmed the star mare will begin her spring campaign in two weeks and said it was most likely to be in the weight-for-age Cockram Stakes.
The four-year-old was untouchable in her debut campaign last spring, winning five consecutive starts in comfortable fashion.
Highlight victories came in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) which she won by three lengths and the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) in which she cruised to a seven-length victory.
After a minor injury saw her miss the early part of the autumn, Atlantic Jewel picked up where she left off in April when comfortably winning the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes and the Group 1 All Aged Stakes.
She is currently paying $4.00 to win the Cox Plate at bookmaker.com.au and holds top position in the Cailfield Cup market at $13.00.
