Superstar colt Pierro is impressing during work in the early stages of his preparation towards the $3 million 2012 Cox Plate (2040m).
The weight-for-age championship and the Caulfield Guineas, were earlier this week outlined by trainer Gai Waterhouse as the major spring targets for the undefeated three-year-old.
Writing on her website, Waterhouse said the two-year-old triple crown winner picked up where he left on Tuesday during a strong 1000-metre gallop with regular jockey Nash Rawiller in the saddle.
“Pierro strode out and Nash said he is such a professional,” Waterhouse said.
“When he gets a little distracted Nash just speaks to him and he immediately concentrates back on the task at hand.
“He’s still quite new into the prep and he just glided over the 1000m.”
Waterhouse said fellow Cox Plate hope More Joyous was “unsurprisngly a joy” and the pair currently sit towards the top of the Cox Plate betting market.
Pierro, undefeated from six starts and a winner of $2.9 million in prize money, is currently second favourite at $9.00 in the bookmaker.com.au Cox Plate market behind unbeaten mare Atlantic Jewel ($4.00).
More Joyous occupies the third line of betting ($11.00) and is coming off an outstanding autumn campaign where she was unbeaten in four starts including three at Group 1 level.
The lightly-raced Landing has also returned to work but his spring targets are still unknown.
The More Than Ready gelding produced dominant victories from his first four career starts before struggling in May when eighth in the Listed Hakwesbury Guineas.
“Landing has come back better than ever,” Waterhouse said.
